Generative engine optimization (GEO)
Definition. Generative engine optimization is the practice of getting your content quoted and cited inside AI-generated answers, in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI surfaces. It is the AI-visibility half of AI SEO, and it optimizes for being the source of an answer rather than for a ranking position.
GEO works at passage level rather than page level. Retrieval systems pull the specific paragraph that answers the question, so a page that buries its answer under 400 words of preamble loses to one that states it in the first two sentences.
The signals that correlate with citation are unglamorous: a direct answer near the top, self-contained sections, concrete numbers with named sources, clear definitions, and mentions on third-party pages the engine already trusts.
GEO does not replace SEO. Analyses of AI Overview citations consistently find that most cited pages already rank in the top ten, so classic ranking work remains the entry ticket.
