Prompt tracking
Definition. Prompt tracking is the practice of running a fixed set of questions against AI engines on a repeating schedule and recording how each one answers: which brands are named, which sources are cited, and how the answer changes over time. It is the rank tracking of AI search.
Prompt volume and refresh frequency are what you are really buying. Fifteen prompts refreshed weekly tells you almost nothing; a hundred prompts refreshed daily across three engines starts to show trends.
Answers vary between runs even for identical prompts, because these systems are non-deterministic. That is why single observations are noise and only repeated sampling produces a signal.
The output is a to-do list, not a result. Knowing a competitor is named instead of you is useful only if you act on why.
