Definition. Answer engine optimization is optimizing content to be the direct answer a search or AI system returns, whether that appears as a featured snippet, a voice result or a line inside an AI-generated summary. In practice most people use AEO and GEO interchangeably.
The distinction some practitioners draw is that AEO predates generative AI: it grew out of featured snippets and voice search, where a single extracted answer replaced a list of links. GEO describes the same goal in a world where the answer is synthesised from several sources rather than lifted from one.
The tactics overlap almost entirely: answer the question in the first paragraph, use the question as the heading, keep the answer self-contained, and support it with something checkable.
