Zero-click search
Definition. A zero-click search is one that ends without the user clicking through to any website, because the results page answered the question itself. SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data put US zero-click searches at 68.01% for the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024.
Zero-click behaviour predates AI: knowledge panels, weather boxes, calculators and featured snippets have absorbed queries for a decade. AI Overviews accelerated a trend rather than starting one.
The strategic response is not to abandon informational content but to change what you measure. Impressions, brand mentions and citations become the leading indicators; sessions become a lagging one.
The queries that still send clicks are the ones a summary cannot satisfy: transactional, navigational, local, and anything needing data only you hold.
