Definition. Content decay is the gradual loss of traffic from a page that once performed well, as competitors publish something better, the information ages, or the results page changes shape around it. Refreshing a decaying page is usually cheaper and faster than writing a new one.
The clearest diagnostic is a Search Console comparison over twelve months, filtered to pages losing clicks while impressions hold. That pattern means the ranking survived and the click did not.
