Keyword difficulty
Definition. Keyword difficulty is a tool-generated score estimating how hard it would be to rank on page one for a query, usually derived from the backlink profiles of the pages already ranking. Every vendor calculates it differently, so scores are not comparable across tools.
The number ignores the variable that matters most: your own site. A score of 40 is trivial for an established domain and impossible for a three-month-old one.
Tools offering difficulty personalised to your domain give a more actionable answer, because the question is not how hard the keyword is but how hard it is for you.
