Duplicate content
Definition. Duplicate content is substantially identical content available at more than one URL, on your own site or across domains. There is no penalty for it in most cases: search engines simply pick one version and ignore the others, which splits signals and wastes crawling.
Internal duplication is usually a URL problem, solved with canonicals, consistent internal linking and parameter handling.
Cross-domain duplication becomes a real risk when the same content is syndicated without a canonical or a link back, because the stronger domain typically wins the version that ranks.
Translated content across languages is not duplicate content. The same language across regional variants can be, which is what hreflang exists to resolve.
