Canonical URL
Definition. A canonical URL is the version of a page you declare as the original when several URLs serve similar content. The rel=canonical link element tells search engines which one to index and which to consolidate signals onto.
It is a hint, not a directive. Search engines can and do choose a different canonical when your signals contradict each other, for example when internal links point at the non-canonical version.
Canonical problems are endemic on e-commerce platforms, where collection paths, filters and variants generate many URLs for the same product.
