Readability checker

Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid grade, sentence statistics, passive voice and your three longest sentences. Nothing leaves your browser.

Readability is not a ranking factor, but short, clear sentences are far easier for a retrieval system to lift as a self-contained answer, and easier for a human to finish. Aim for a Flesch score between 55 and 70 for a business audience.

The tool

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.

Your results appear here as soon as you change a value.

How to use it

  1. Paste a full draft, not a paragraph The statistics need a few hundred words to be meaningful.
  2. Fix the longest sentences first The tool lists your three worst. Splitting them usually moves the score more than any other single edit.
  3. Cut the passive constructions that hide the actor Not all passive voice is wrong. The problem is the kind that removes who did what.
  4. Do not chase the number A Flesch score of 90 on a technical topic usually means you have removed the precision your reader needed.

How the numbers work

Everything here runs in JavaScript in your browser. No input is sent anywhere, nothing is stored, and there is no account, no email gate and no export limit. The maths is deliberately simple so you can check it: where a benchmark is used, the source is named on the page rather than hidden behind a "based on industry data" claim.

Where this calculator uses published research, it uses these: the position-CTR meta-analysis from First Page Sage (updated May 2025), the 34.5% AI Overview click reduction measured by Ahrefs across 300,000 keywords, and Pew Research Center's click-behaviour study. Tool prices come from vendor pricing pages read on 2 August 2026. All of them are averages, and averages are a starting point, not a forecast: your own Search Console data beats every benchmark on this page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?

For general business writing, 55 to 70. Above 70 reads as consumer-friendly, below 40 reads as academic. Technical documentation legitimately scores lower because the vocabulary is the point.

Does readability affect SEO?

Not as a ranking factor. It affects whether people finish the page and whether a passage can be extracted cleanly as an answer, both of which affect outcomes you care about.

How is the score calculated?

Flesch Reading Ease uses average sentence length and average syllables per word. Flesch-Kincaid converts the same inputs into a US school grade level. Syllable counting is approximate in any automated tool, including this one.
