llms.txt generator

Build a valid llms.txt file for your site in a minute, and read a straight answer about whether it currently does anything.

llms.txt is a proposed markdown file listing your most important pages for AI systems. Adoption by the major crawlers remains minimal and no engine has confirmed it uses the file for retrieval. It takes ten minutes, it cannot hurt, and it should not be anywhere near the top of your list.

How to use it

  1. List the pages you would want quoted Documentation, pricing, definitive guides. Not your entire sitemap: the point is curation.
  2. Write a summary a stranger could use One paragraph explaining what the site is and who it serves.
  3. Save it at the root It must resolve at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, as plain text or markdown.
  4. Do the things that actually work first Crawlable pages, clear structure, real citations and third-party mentions move AI visibility today. This file does not, yet.

How the numbers work

Everything here runs in JavaScript in your browser. No input is sent anywhere, nothing is stored, and there is no account, no email gate and no export limit. The maths is deliberately simple so you can check it: where a benchmark is used, the source is named on the page rather than hidden behind a "based on industry data" claim.

Where this calculator uses published research, it uses these: the position-CTR meta-analysis from First Page Sage (updated May 2025), the 34.5% AI Overview click reduction measured by Ahrefs across 300,000 keywords, and Pew Research Center's click-behaviour study. Tool prices come from vendor pricing pages read on 2 August 2026. All of them are averages, and averages are a starting point, not a forecast: your own Search Console data beats every benchmark on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an llms.txt file?

Probably not, yet. Crawler-log studies show negligible pickup by the major AI crawlers, and no engine has confirmed using it for retrieval. If you run documentation-heavy software, it is a cheap bet; otherwise it is a distraction from work that measurably helps.

What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch and is honoured by well-behaved bots today. llms.txt is a proposal for telling AI systems what is worth reading, and is largely unhonoured. One is access control, the other is a reading list.

Where does llms.txt go?

At the root of your domain, so it resolves at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. Some sites also publish an llms-full.txt containing the full text of key pages.
